Bremer Netzresidenz 2024/25 EN

Nowadays, literature can be created anywhere – at a desk, on the road or even in the digital world. And literature from and in the city of Bremen often makes waves across national boundaries. So, why then should a writing residency be tied to a specific location? The Bremer Netzresidenz creates space for location-free literary work and combines digital working methods with literature in the public space. 

The Bremer Netzresidenz is awarded every two years by the Literaturhaus Bremen with the support of the Bremen State Ministry of the Arts.

Contents/Topic of the scholarship

The focus of the three-month stipend will be on the engagement with literature in the public space. Funding is provided for the development and implementation of an innovative and original literary project, i.e. one which has not been realised elsewhere. Digital media and formats can play a central role, but the project end-product as such does not have to be virtual. We will favour projects that will remain visible and to be enjoyed in the (analogue) public space in or around Bremen after the stipend period is over.

Virtual stipend location

The chosen project itself will take place virtually. The author can work location-flexibly during the stipend period and is in no way tied to the area of Bremen. However, the Literaturhaus can facilitate visits to Bremen if requested.

In addition, and in cooperation with the Sylt Foundation, the successful candidate will be offered a four-week writing residency at kunst:raum sylt quelle foundation on the island. 

Project submission and subsequent award

Funding is provided for literary projects with a focus on cosmopolitan literary exchange. Authors from the UNESCO Cities of Literature can therefore also apply. The prerequisite for the application is that they already have a publication record (subsidy publishers, BOD, self-publishing and e-books are strictly excluded). The stipend is endowed with a one-time amount of 2,500 €. An independent jury will select the winning project.

Stipend period

The online residency will take place from 1 March to 31 May 2027. The Literaturhaus Bremen will set up a subpage on its own website, where the project developed for the stipend will be presented. Following the project period, the successful candidate will be invited to present their work to the public at a literary event in Bremen at a later date.

Applicants should send a project outline (three A4 pages) and a short CV to netzresidenz@literaturhaus-bremen.de 

The project outline should include the idea, specific information on how it will be implemented, a cost projection and a work schedule. After precise consultation, the Literaturhaus Bremen will cover any necessary material and project costs. The project outline for the application as well as any texts created during the stipend period should not be AI-generated; if generative AI does have to be used as an aid (for example, in work organization, idea development, text revision or literature research), this must be identified by appropriate formulations and methodologically justified.
